Thorntons – The Sweeter Side of Life
In 1911 when commercial traveller, Joseph Thornton, opened his first shop in Sheffield, his aim was simply to create the finest sweet shop in town. Over 100 years later, Thorntons Plc is a £221m turnover company with over 249 shops and over 186 franchises. It sells the finest confectionery in towns and cities throughout the UK.
Although the company has expanded its product range to include hampers, cuddly collectibles and even flower arrangements, the Thorntons brand remains famous for its confectionery. Based on the ‘Art of the Chocolatier’, Thorntons prides itself on the unique taste of its confectionery achieved by using only the freshest, finest ingredients.
At Thorntons, nothing is taken for granted or sacrificed to compromise quality. The recent consolidation of manufacturing, packing, and distribution into one site has helped to ensure that standards are as high as possible.
The recent integration of toffee production into Thornton Park led to a requirement for a new storage area. This is where Redirack were able to help, being called in to install racking for the new storage area.
Caroline Simpson, Senior Buyer at Thorntons, explains: “We have exceedingly high expectations of our product, quality and service and our suppliers are an integral and vitally important element in ensuring we deliver consistently high levels of quality and service to our customers.”
Thorntons asked a number of potential suppliers to go through a tender process and they selected Redirack. “They were both competitive and able to demonstrate a racking solution similar to that recommended to Thorntons.”
Caroline continued: “A hygienic environment in which to store our products was particularly important to us. The new system has also enabled Thorntons to improve efficiencies.”
Redirack installed six runs of push-back racking, each over six metres in length and nearly four metres high, creating operating aisles of 1.4 meters wide. Each bay houses three pallets of 2500mm in depth and all frames incorporate Redirack’s unique sacrificial leg feature for easy replacement in the event of damage.
Caroline concluded: “We were very impressed with the professionalism of Redirack and wouldn’t hesitate to use them again.” Sweet praise indeed!
