One of the UK’s leading independent alcoholic drinks manufacturers and distributors contacted Redirack with a request to supply a bespoke Pallet Racking solution for one of its Distilleries. They were looking to store a large number of wooden casks in their 288 sq m warehouse.
It is a well-known fact that alcohol such as Whisky, Brandy and Sherry matures and improves its flavour over time, which can obviously be a lengthy process. As the company wanted to store casks in this particular facility, they had very specific storage requirements that had to be met by Redirack’s Technical Engineers. Firstly, access to casks via walkways in order to take samples was a critical aspect to the design. Consideration then had to be given to the type of handling equipment to be utilised, as well as meeting the very strict measures required in terms of how individual casks were supported due to ‘Angels Share’. (The Angels Share is the amount of distilled spirits lost to evaporation from the cask or barrel into the air as it ages).
When Redirack were awarded the contract to design, manufacture and install a bespoke Cask & Barrel Pallet Racking solution this involved several consultations and design revisions to ensure the project met the company’s very exacting standards.
Our SEIR’S (Storage Equipment Installers Registration Scheme) qualified installation team then installed a single run of cask racking x 15 lanes. Each lane consisted of 4 levels; each is capable of storing up to 8 casks in depth. The design incorporated 800mm wide walkways that were positioned between every two lanes of racking. Walkways were then fitted with thick moisture-resistant chipboard accessible via a single flight steel staircase plus a cat ladder at the opposite end of the installation.
