Pallet Racking FAQs at Redirack

Pallet racking is an industrial storage system that is specifically designed for storing any palletised products in warehouses, cold stores and yard environments. We cater for all pallet types including non-standard, Redirack’s technical engineers are able to offer a solution that meets your requirements.

Pallet racking systems are manufactured from cold rolled steel sections and are comprised of a number of frames and beams. A frame has two upright posts that are connected together by a series of diagonal and horizontal braces. Beam levels are adjustable on a 75mm pitch to cater for different pallet heights. Bays are created by connecting several frames together with two or more pairs of beams per bay.

The capacity of a bay depends on the position of the beams within that bay. The greater the vertical distance apart, the lower the capacity of the bay. A bay that only has one pair of beams is fundamentally far less stable than a run of bays. We therefore do not recommend single bays due to the reduced stability of the racking structure and would generally advise against this if possible. Redirack offer a broad range of rack frames and beams our technical engineers are able to offer a solution whatever the storage issue.

Beam lengths in the UK are usually 2700mm as this accommodates two 1200mm wide UK pallets stored side by side with a 100mm clearance either side of the pallet. Redirack offers 3 post types of varying thicknesses which means we are able to offer a wide range of racking frame load capabilities.

If pallets are 1000mm deep and stored on 900mm deep frames it allows for a 50mm overhang front and back. Alternatively, pallets be stored 1200mm deep on 1100mm deep frames to allow racks to be used to store a combination of UK and Euro pallets. Other frame depths are available to cater for non-standard pallets

Redirack have their own in-house teams of installers that are very experienced at ensuring your racks are installed both correctly and to SEMA (Storage Equipment Manufacturers Association) guidelines. Our installers are all SEIRS (Storage Equipment Installers Registration Scheme) registered, from advanced skills through to site management capability. We have our In-house SARI inspectors (Sema Approved Rack Inspectors) which means Redirack offer a complete service from assessing your site needs and inspections through to manufacturing and finally installation of your racks.

Very narrow aisle pallet racking optimises space utilisation whilst providing unrestricted access to all pallets and is used by a range of differing industries that need 100% accessibility to each individual pallet. Specialist handling equipment is required for all narrow aisle pallet racking systems.

This system is utilised by many different industries from food and beverage manufacturing and distribution to electronics,3PL and retail. Our technical engineers will visit your site and identify how to maximise the available storage area ensuring that pallet racking in a narrow aisle configuration will meet the specific storage needs of your site.

Very narrow aisle pallet racking is manufactured from cold rolled steel sections and comprises of vertical upright posts which have beams attached at variable levels. The system is manufactured from the same basic components as wide aisle pallet racking but the runs of racking are positioned closer together eliminating wasted aisle space that could be utilised for additional pallet storage. Narrow aisle racking is designed to fully optimise the available area providing up to 40% more floor space than a wide aisle system. Specialist forklift trucks with guide rails allow pallets to be accessed at higher levels without the risk of damage to stock as well as the racking structure.

Double deep pallet racking systems are an ideal storage option for many industrial warehouse applications. Using the same principles as wide aisle pallet racking, double deep racks stores 2 pallets deep or 4 pallets deep between aisles. It delivers increased storage density when compared to wide aisle racking and requires specialised fork lift trucks.

Double deep racking utilises one row of standard pallet racking behind another. Using an extended reach lift truck, the operator places the back pallet into the system first, then places another pallet in front of it.

Galvanised racking is used in a variety of different industries. Some of the most popular being food & beverage and the Pharmaceutical & Chemical Industry, due to being able to be used in cold storage environments.

As the most extensively utilised industrial storage system for warehouses and yards, Redirack’s wide aisle pallet racking is manufactured in both standard duty and heavy-duty steel. Our systems are suitable for the storage of the majority of palletised goods including food, ingredients and beverages, retail and 3PL applications as well as building and construction products.

Our technical engineers will visit your site and identify how to maximise the available storage area ensuring that pallet racking in a wide aisle configuration will meet the specific storage needs of your site.

Wide aisle pallet racking is manufactured from cold rolled steel sections and comprises of vertical upright posts which have beams attached at variable levels. A pallet racking bay has two frames with beam levels which are dependent upon the height from the floor to the first beam level as well as the height of the uprights.

Wide aisle systems are available in both double-sided and single-sided configurations. Double-sided racking allows access to pallets from either side, and can be used throughout the warehouse, creating storage space on both sides of the structure. Single-sided racks can be free standing for access from both sides or can fit flush against the wall and access to pallets is obviously only from one side.

We do not recommend single bays due to the reduced stability of the racking structure and would generally advise against this if possible as bay that only has one pair of beams is fundamentally far less stable than a run of bays.

Drive-in pallet racking is suitable for industry sectors that generally store their product ranges for long periods of time rather than fast-moving stock that is generally rotated on a daily/weekly basis. For example: retailers that stock-pile seasonal goods for traditional periods such as Easter or Christmas will opt for a drive-in storage system as eliminating aisles produces a much higher storage density and obviously increase overall storage capacity.

The system is manufactured from the same basic components as wide aisle Drive-in pallet racking utilises pallet rails/portal beams to carry the pallets ensuring each pallet is individually supported so that damage from crushing due to block stacking is eliminated. Trucks drive into the racking to load or retrieve pallets which means that the first pallet that is stored in the rack is the last pallet out. In addition, guide rails can also be incorporated into the design if required.
