Looking to maximise storage density in your warehouse or distribution facility? Push back pallet racking is the ideal solution. This form of pallet racking allows for multiple pallets to be stored in deep lanes, typically from 2 to 6 pallets deep. These racking systems carry all the benefits of drive-in racking, but allows for higher throughput and increased stock accessibility.

How Does Push Back Racking Work?

Push back pallet racking is a pallet storage system used in warehouses and distribution centres to increase storage density and maximise the use of space.

As with drive-in racking, push back racking systems operate on a First-In, Last-Out (FILO) operation. This means that the last pallet loaded onto a lane will be the first pallet to be unloaded when required.

Here’s how it works: products are stored on platforms that are mounted on a slope and are retrieved from the front of the system. When a pallet is loaded, installed rollers or carts enable the loaded pallet to “push” the existing pallets further back. Once a pallet has been retrieved, the pallets behind them then move forwards to the front of the lane via gravity.

This type of retrieval system is suitable for the storage of bulk products of non-perishables, and freezer environments and allows for faster stock accessibility. Conventional forklift trucks can be utilised here, with the only requirement being tiltable forks/masts.

Overall, Push-back pallet racking is a storage system that uses gravity and a cart-based design to efficiently store multiple pallets in deep lanes. It’s a valuable option for organisations looking to maximise their warehouse storage space.

Types of Push Back Pallet Racking Systems

Cart Push Back Pallet Racking

In a cart push back racking system, the movement is controlled by the forklift operator. Each pallet sits on a cart, and when a new pallet is loaded, it “pushes” the previous one back into the lane. As pallets are retrieved, the remaining carts roll forward to the pick-face using gravity. This design offers smoother product handling and is well-suited to high-density storage where faster stock access is required.

Roller Push Back Pallet Racking

In a roller push back racking system, the movement is assisted by magnetic speed controllers to decelerate the pallets. When a pallet is loaded, it pushes the existing pallets back. As pallets are retrieved, gravity moves the remaining pallets forward to the pick face. This system provides high-density storage with enhanced efficiency, making it ideal for bulk goods and fast-moving inventory.

Why Choose Push Back Warehouse Racking?

There are countless reasons to select our modern, innovative pallet racking solutions, but here are just a few of the key benefits to your business:

Adjustable Designs: This type of racking is also relatively easy to expand to accommodate changing business storage needs.

✅ Enhanced Space Utilisation: This type of racking can make better use of available floor space by reducing the number of aisles required, and also reduces the need for lane retrieval for forklift trucks.

✅ Greater Accessibility: Because every lane can be loaded and unloaded from the front, this eliminates the need for forklifts to enter the rack. This allows for direct access to each SKU, meaning greater stock accessibility when compared to drive-in racking.

✅ Faster Stock Unloading: By ensuring all SKUs can be accessed via the front, this type of racking facilitates faster loading and unloading.

✅ Ideal for Bulk Items: By operating on a FILO basis, this system is ideal for non-perishables, cold stores and large volume SKUs.

Push Back Pallet Racking Manufacturers

When a pallet is loaded, the rollers/carts enable the loading pallet to push the existing pallets further back. when a pallet is retrieved, gravity enables the remaining pallets to move forward. In a roller push back system, the movement is assisted by magnetic speed controllers to decelerate the pallets. In a cart pushback system, the movement is controlled by the forklift operator.
